If you live here, the calendar has quietly rearranged itself. The two fixed points in a New Canaan summer week are no longer a downtown block and a park entrance. They are the Lumberyard Lot at 244 Elm on Saturday morning and the lawn behind Waveny House on Wednesday night, and almost everything worth planning around this July slots into the space between them.
The dining scene has adjusted to the same axis. Pine Street now has a serious kitchen at the old South End address, Main Street has picked up a second Italian, and Grace Farms has stopped acting like a museum in the summer and started acting like a supper club with an 80-acre backyard. Here is how a resident can actually use the next six weeks.
The Saturday move nobody quite absorbed
The New Canaan Farmers Market relocated to the Lumber Yard Lot at 244 Elm Street, next to the train station, running every Saturday from April 11 through December 19, 2026, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. The Board of Selectmen approved the season unanimously, and Selectman Steve Karl called it a Saturday morning tradition in town that has moved a lot of foot traffic into that corner of downtown.
The move matters because it collapses two errands into one walk. You can park once, hit the market, and be on Elm or Main inside four minutes. What you can actually buy on a July Saturday is more specific than the market's category page suggests:
- Riverbank Organic Farm for certified organic produce, cut flowers, and ferments
- Smith's Acres for seasonal fruit, vegetables, and herbs
- Woodland Farm for berries and unpasteurized cider
- Seacoast Mushrooms for gourmet mushrooms grown without pesticides
- Teapot Hill Farm for tapped maple syrup out of Wilton
- Bistro Du Soleil / Rincon Taqueria for prepared Mediterranean and Mexican
- Bongo & Capacci for hand-crafted artisan pasta
- Carrot Top Kitchens and D's Kitchen for prepared foods and gluten-free baked goods
- East Coast Kombucha for organic probiotic tea
Pre-orders should be placed no less than 24 hours before the market, which is the small piece of institutional knowledge that separates residents from visitors. If you know what you want for a Saturday dinner party, you order Thursday night and pick up at 10.
Wednesday belongs to Waveny
The other fixed point is the free concert series on the lawn behind Waveny House. The Waveny Summer Concerts program returned June 19 with an 11-week series of live performances, ranging from folk, pop and rock to country and big band, running 7:30 to 9:30 on Wednesday evenings on the lawn behind Waveny House where the community gathers with chairs, blankets and picnics. The June bookings opened with folk rocker Kenn Morr and the country western band Gunsmoke; the day-of schedule and any weather postponements are posted on newcanaan.info under the blue bar at the top of the homepage.
A Wednesday concert plus a proper dinner is the week's easiest sequence, and the dinner options changed materially over the last twelve months. Which brings us to Pine Street.
Pine Street has a real kitchen again
The most consequential dining opening in New Canaan is The Waveny Tavern by PXK at 36 Pine Street, from chef Peter X. Kelly and operator Dan Camporeale, serving Contemporary American cuisine with a New England accent. The space is the old South End address in the Pine Street mini-mall, and the signature is the 40-oz Cowboy Ribeye for Two, the steak that beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America. If you remember the pattern of walking down the alley for a modern tavern dinner, that pattern is back with a different chef and a different level of ambition.
Main Street picked up a second Italian last summer. Doppio opened at 62 Main Street, owned by Joseph Barresi with his brother Louis as executive chef, a reference to the "double" in the name and to the sister restaurant in Greenwich. The room has indoor and outdoor patio seating, which puts it in the small group of downtown patios that actually work in a July heatwave.
And Elm, the fixture at the top of most residents' short lists, spent the shoulder season quietly rebuilding itself. Chef Luke Venner spent his "vacation" at Elm remixing dishes and reimagining and renovating the entire dining room, in his 10th season as executive chef and co-owner. Same Double-Double, different room. Worth a look if your last visit was more than a year ago.
Grace Farms is running its own summer
Grace Farms at 365 Lukes Wood Road treats summer as programming season, not off-season, and the calendar deserves a second read. The Summer Stroll format is a guided walk through the landscape that invites you to notice the shifting signs of the season and the plant and animal life that makes this landscape so special, exploring the interconnectedness of surrounding ecosystems. The July walk is a Saturday morning slot at 11, which pairs cleanly with a Farmers Market run earlier if you want to make a morning of it.
The higher-commitment option is Dinner from the Garden. The evening starts with handcrafted mocktails and seasonal bites on the Plaza, among blooming apple and plum trees and the new Dancing Trees seating designed by Kazuyo Sejima & Associates, then moves into the glass-enclosed Commons for a dinner prepared with fruits and vegetables recently harvested from the Grace Farms Garden. Tickets are 21+, wine is paired, and the shift from Plaza to Commons is the reason to book instead of showing up. Look ahead: Leslie Odom, Jr. is booked for Saturday, September 26, bringing his Tony and GRAMMY Award-winning voice for an evening of soulful, sophisticated music, which sells out early and is worth reserving before Labor Day.
What the week actually looks like
Once you accept the two anchors, the rest of the week arranges itself. Here is a residents' template for a July week, with the pieces mapped to specific addresses instead of categories.
| Day | Anchor | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday morning | Farmers Market | Lumberyard Lot, 244 Elm | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| Saturday late morning | Summer Stroll | Grace Farms, 365 Lukes Wood | 11 a.m. |
| Wednesday evening | Waveny Summer Concert | Waveny House lawn | 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. |
| Wednesday dinner | Waveny Tavern by PXK / Doppio / Elm | Pine, Main, Elm | Pre or post concert |
| Booked ahead | Dinner from the Garden | Grace Farms Plaza + Commons | Evening, 21+ |
Two things residents forget. First, the market is closed on the Saturday of the town's late-June event, per Board of Selectmen minutes, so double-check newcanaanfarmersmarket.net if you are counting on a specific date. Second, the summer-long concert schedule along with any day-of notices about weather postponements is posted at newcanaan.info in the blue bar at the top of the homepage. That is the source of truth on a stormy Wednesday, not social media.
Two smaller shifts worth knowing
The July 4 event this year was staged as part of the America250 New Canaan program, and a new Sensory Zone was set up at the New Canaan High School soccer fields by Farm Road, offering reduced crowds and noise for a more comfortable experience. That zone is likely to become a permanent option for large Waveny events, which changes the calculus for households that historically stayed home for fireworks.
And a rule change residents keep bumping into: the Town Council voted 8-4 to pass a summertime ban on gas-powered leaf blowers in New Canaan. If your landscaping crew has not adjusted the July and August schedule yet, that is a conversation to have this week, not in September.
The point of paying attention
New Canaan reads differently when you stop treating it as a menu of one-off events and start treating it as a two-anchor week. Saturday at the Lumberyard is your ingredients and your foot traffic through downtown. Wednesday on the Waveny lawn is your unpaid evening plan for eleven weeks running. Pine Street, Main Street, and Grace Farms fill in around those two points, and every restaurant opening this year has essentially argued for a place in that rhythm.
If you are already thinking about how your home fits into a New Canaan year like this one, and whether the market timing works for a move-up, a downsize, or a first listing, the team at The Fair Team knows this town on a street-by-street basis.
